Island 97           ADD INFO

The easiest entrance to this island is on the west side and about 1/3 of the way down that side. The exit from the canoe here is not as steep nor is the water as deep as other areas around the island. Additionally, the access to the campsite is better at this point. The entrance is currently marked by two bands of yellow surveyors flagging tape approximately 6 feet above the island surface. Although the map indicates a solid island, as of this inspection, and and at the current water level, the island has a channel cut through it, dividing it into a smaller northern portion and a larger southern portion. The upper section is approximately 1/3 the size of the larger portion. However, due to the shallow area along the upstream edge, this area may become the larger part of the island.

This island has an obvious history of being used as a campsite. There is a fair amount of camping debris which will need to be removed. There are several flat and cleared areas which will accommodate several tents. The amount of human traffic on this island has eliminated any grass like vegetation. There does not appear to be any small root structure available to prevent top soil loss but there are certainly larger trees here -- probably in excess of 15 years old. Some trees along the upper side of the island show extensive root exposure as the result of erosion. Establishing this island as a campsite will require setting the post, installing the journal box and cleaning up the litter.
